GoBe3: Why Does It Show Energy Intake When I'm Not Eating?

GoBe3, does GoBe3 track ketons, why do I see calorie intake if I haven't eaten anything

Understanding Energy Readings When You're Not Eating

You might notice energy intake readings on your GoBe device even when you haven't consumed any food. This is a common observation, and here's why it happens:

Your Body's Energy Sources:

When you don't eat, your body doesn't magically create energy. Instead, it relies on its stored energy reserves to fuel essential functions. These reserves primarily come from:

  • Stored Fat: Fat is a major energy storage form in the body. When food isn't available, fat is broken down into free fatty acids, which are then used for energy.

  • Stored Glucose (Glycogen): Your liver and muscles store glucose in the form of glycogen. This is a more readily available energy source but is typically used up relatively quickly during fasting or increased activity.

  • Ketone Bodies: During prolonged periods of fasting or when carbohydrate intake is very low, the body starts producing ketone bodies from the breakdown of fat. These can be used as an alternative energy source, particularly for the brain.

Why GoBe Shows Energy Intake During Fasting:

Your HEALBE GoBe is very sensitive and registers various physiological processes in your body, including the release of ketones into the bloodstream, which can occur during fasting, after significant physical activity, intermittent eating, alcohol consumption, and ketogenic diets. These processes can be interpreted by GoBe as energy intake.

Important Note on GoBe's Readings:

Currently, GoBe's algorithms track overall energy intake based on your body's physiological responses. It does not yet distinguish the source of this energy. This means that the "nighttime peaks" or energy intake you see when you haven't eaten could be a result of your body releasing stored fat (leading to free fatty acids and potentially ketone production) or even residual metabolic processes from earlier food intake.

We are actively working on updates to our algorithms that we hope will, in the future, allow for a more accurate identification of the sources of energy intake.

If you are focused on weight management, we recommend looking at the overall trends in your energy balance over a longer period using the "Trends" feature in the "Energy Balance" tab of the app. This will give you a better understanding of your energy dynamics and their impact on your weight.

In summary, the energy your body uses when you're not eating comes from your stored fat, glycogen, and, during longer fasts, ketone bodies. The energy readings you see on your GoBe during these times reflect these internal physiological processes, and the device currently doesn't differentiate this from energy derived directly from food.
